Okay, I'm not as bad as most rabid Joss Whedon fans but I recognized his genius after Firefly/Serenity. Then I read Astonishing X-Men, and though it's not his best medium (too short and with space alien storylines IMO) his unique way of writing still shines through. So I finally bit the bullet and bought some Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs. Afterall, billions of seemingly endless fans can't be wrong right?
So I'm in middle of watching season 2 and I'm in love with it. It's impossible not to enjoy Joss's work. And even though I have a bunch of personal issues with the show; I'm still enjoying it like whoa. It's too fun not to find it uplifting and escapist.
Now for all my personal issues with the show: David Boreanaz annoys me. I hate Faith's character. The special effects only make me laugh. ALL of the mythological stuff is completely wrong with no basis in reality. And to prove my uber nerddom I critique the gypsy and occult history. Joss plays up comedy over drama too often and the drama comes off as short and stunted. I don't think the show should have been emo like Grey's Anatomy, which plays drama to point where it's soap opera proportions with music and everything. But I love drama more than comedy and wish that it got more screentime so all the well-written emotional charged moments could be enjoyed fully.
I'm only up to season 2 and I'm trying to remain as spoiler free as possible, while using the internet, so yeah's that an impossiblity... I'm just sort of dabbling in Buffy fandom. My interest in it is so new I don't even know what ships I like yet. I'm enjoying as a guilty pleasure Buffy/Giles. And then there's the relationship that screams, AngelofSnow you should like this one, Buffy/Angel.
Lol, I'll watch anything with a girl main character who's strong. And I'll ship any relationship where both the girl and guy are dominate characters who go through a roller coaster love/hate relationship. If you know of any shows featuring that dynamic. Send them my way.
